Growing up in Meru County, my early life was marked by both hope and hardship. Born into a low-income home, the financial strain on my family was exacerbated by my father's prolonged battle with a throat tumor. With my family's financial resources dwindling, my dreams of pursuing education beyond the eighth grade seemed increasingly out of reach. However, with determination and fervent prayers, a new chapter began when I qualified for the EFAC scholarship.

More than just the scholarship, EFAC was a gateway to my dream high school—Naivasha Girls High School. Here, I encountered a world of possibilities that seemed previously unattainable. The professional and peer mentorship provided by EFAC played a pivotal role in shaping my aspirations and nurturing my potential. Initially drawn to the idea of becoming a financial engineer as a solution to my family's financial struggles, my career aspirations evolved. From considering teaching, medicine, or nutrition, I eventually gravitated towards accounting, thanks to EFAC’s comprehensive career mentorship.

EFAC’s influence did not end with high school. My journey continued with a Bachelor's Degree in Commerce with a finance option at Multimedia University, fully funded by EFAC. The financial support extended beyond tuition, including living stipends which I wisely invested in pursuing Certified Public Accountant (CPA) qualifications. The mentorship and support I received from EFAC continued throughout my university life.

One of the most impactful aspects of EFAC's program was the annual Bridge-to-Employment Workshop. This initiative was instrumental in preparing us for the professional world. It offered practical skills in resume writing, interview techniques, and strategies to navigate post-graduation challenges, such as Imposter Syndrome. The workshop also included community service, instilling in me the virtues of giving back, public speaking, and cautiousness, respectful interactions with others.

The culmination of this journey was the grand Wezesha Workshop. This workshop was a revelation, teaching us how to position ourselves uniquely in a crowded job market. It was here that I learned the art of drafting a compelling CV, mastering interview skills, and embracing the entrepreneurial spirit. EFAC’s partnership with SOMO provided me with a platform to connect with mentors who nurtured my entrepreneurial ambitions.

The practical experience provided by EFAC’s Wezesha Workshop was invaluable. Through mock interviews and a day of job shadowing, I met my current employer at an audit firm, Crowe. Determined to uphold the prestigious name of EFAC, I approached the opportunity with the utmost professionalism. Despite the internship being unpaid, I recognized the importance of acquiring practical skills. This dedication paid off when I was offered a three-month attachment, which led to a one-year paid internship and ultimately, permanent employment.

EFAC’s impact on my career was further validated when I was honoured with the “Professor Leah Marangu Woman of Character Award” at the 2022 graduation ceremony. This accolade, recognizing my hard work, professional excellence, and community service, was a significant boost to my confidence and career trajectory.

Today, two years out of university, I am flourishing as a businesswoman, running my small enterprise while continuing to develop professionally. My journey, from a challenging childhood to becoming a successful accounts personnel and entrepreneur, is a testament to the transformative power of EFAC’s mentorship and career development initiatives.

My background and the trials I faced did not define me; instead, they fueled my drive to succeed. I am profoundly grateful to God and to EFAC for the investment in my future. Their support has not only enabled me to overcome my early challenges but has also empowered me to make a meaningful impact in both my career and community.

In reflecting on my journey, I am reminded of the strength and resilience that has brought me to where I am today. The lessons learned and the opportunities provided by EFAC have been instrumental in shaping my path, and I am committed to using my experiences to inspire and support others on their journeys.
